Gait & Postural Analysis
How you stand, walk, and run reveals the compensation patterns that everyday assessment misses.
What is Gait & Postural Analysis?
Gait and postural analysis is a systematic, observational assessment of how your body organizes itself in standing, walking, and running. It is one of the most informative parts of a thorough musculoskeletal evaluation — because pain is almost always the downstream symptom of a movement pattern, not the pattern itself.
We assess static posture (alignment at rest), dynamic posture (how you move through transitions), and gait mechanics (foot strike, hip control, trunk rotation, arm swing). The goal is to identify the asymmetries, compensations, and inefficiencies that are loading the painful structure repetitively.
At Functional Restoration Institute we use this analysis to build treatment around the actual driver — not the location of the symptom. The result is a plan that resolves the cause rather than chasing pain from one region to another.
Benefits
Benefits of Gait & Postural Analysis
Reveals the actual driver of your pain
Most chronic pain is loaded by a specific compensation. Identifying it changes treatment from reactive to targeted.
Detects asymmetries early
Side-to-side differences in load, range, and timing often appear long before pain does — giving us a chance to address them.
Informs corrective exercise
We design exercise around what your body is actually doing, not generic templates — making prescription far more effective.
Improves performance
Cleaner mechanics mean better force transfer, lower energy cost, and reduced injury risk in running and lifting populations.
Tracks progress objectively
Re-assessment provides clear, repeatable evidence that your mechanics — and not just your pain — are improving.
Your Visit
What to Expect at FR Institute
Your provider will guide you through a sequence of standing, walking, and (when relevant) running tasks while observing key landmarks and movement patterns. We may use video to slow movement down and review findings with you on screen.
After the assessment we walk you through what we saw, what it likely means for your symptoms, and which findings will direct your treatment. The whole assessment typically takes 20–30 minutes and informs everything we do from that point forward.
