McKenzie Method (MDT)

A research-backed system for diagnosing your pain pattern and putting you in control of resolving it.

What is McKenzie Method (MDT)?

The McKenzie Method, also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), is an evidence-based assessment and treatment system for the spine and extremities. Its core insight is that most musculoskeletal pain has a specific 'directional preference' — a movement pattern that, when performed correctly and repeatedly, reduces or centralizes symptoms.

The assessment uses repeated movements to identify which direction makes you better and which makes you worse. From there, treatment becomes a precise, repeatable program that you can perform on your own — turning passive care into active self-management.

McKenzie is particularly powerful for disc-related pain, sciatica, and recurrent neck or back issues. At Functional Restoration Institute we integrate MDT with hands-on treatment when needed, but the goal is always to put you in the driver's seat of your recovery.

Benefits

Benefits of McKenzie Method (MDT)

Identifies your directional preference

A reproducible movement pattern that consistently reduces or centralizes your symptoms — the foundation of your self-treatment plan.

Centralizes referred pain

Pain referring into the leg or arm progressively retreats toward the spine, a strong predictor of full recovery.

Empowers self-management

You leave knowing exactly what to do — not dependent on the clinic for relief between visits.

Reduces recurrence

Patients trained in their preferred movements respond faster to flare-ups and have fewer recurrences over time.

Strong evidence base

MDT is one of the most extensively researched manual therapy systems for low back pain and disc-related conditions.

Your Visit

What to Expect at FR Institute

Your first visit is heavily assessment-based. Your provider will ask you to perform a series of repeated movements while tracking exactly how your symptoms respond. The pattern that produces lasting reduction or centralization becomes your treatment.

You will leave with a small set of specific exercises and a clear schedule for performing them. We re-test at each visit and adjust based on your response. Most patients see meaningful change within 2–4 visits when the assessment matches the condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — that is a common misconception. While extension is a frequent finding, the actual direction is determined by your individual response to the assessment. Some patients respond best to flexion, side glide, or rotation.
