Conditions We Treat

Facet Syndrome

Spinal facet joint irritation causing localised back or neck pain.

Overview

Understanding Facet Syndrome

Facet syndrome refers to pain originating from the small paired joints (facet joints) at the back of each spinal segment. These joints guide spinal motion and bear significant load, especially during extension and rotation. When they become irritated, inflamed, or arthritic, the result is a characteristic pattern of localised back or neck pain that often refers into the buttock, shoulder, or limb.

Facet pain is commonly missed because it can mimic disc and nerve problems. A skilled clinical exam — not just imaging — is the key to identifying the facets as the true pain generator.

At FRI we routinely resolve facet pain through a combination of targeted adjustments, McKenzie-based directional preference, and DNS-based stabilization, helping patients avoid injections and procedures.

Recognising the Signs

Symptoms & Causes

Common Symptoms

  • Localised back or neck pain, often one-sided
  • Pain worse with extension or rotation, better with flexion
  • Stiffness in the morning that eases with movement
  • Referred pain into the buttock, thigh, shoulder, or upper arm
  • Difficulty standing for long periods or arching back
  • Tenderness directly over the affected segment

Underlying Causes

  • Degenerative changes and facet arthritis
  • Repetitive extension or rotation loading
  • Poor posture and prolonged static positions
  • Trauma or whiplash injuries
  • Adjacent disc degeneration shifting load to the facets
