Functional Movement Screening (FMS)

A 7-test movement screen that exposes the asymmetries and restrictions driving — or about to drive — your pain.

What is Functional Movement Screening (FMS)?

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a standardized, evidence-based assessment of seven foundational movement patterns: deep squat, hurdle step, in-line lunge, shoulder mobility, active straight leg raise, trunk stability push-up, and rotary stability. Each pattern is scored against a clear rubric, giving us an objective baseline of how your body moves.

The value of the FMS is not the score itself — it is what the score reveals. Asymmetries between sides, restrictions in specific patterns, and pain provoked during testing all point us toward the underlying issue. Research consistently shows that low FMS scores and side-to-side asymmetries are associated with elevated injury risk in athletic and tactical populations.

At Functional Restoration Institute we use the FMS as a screening tool — not a diagnosis. Findings direct the next layer of assessment and inform the corrective exercise plan we build for you.

Benefits

Benefits of Functional Movement Screening (FMS)

Standardized, repeatable assessment

The FMS uses a clear scoring rubric, so the baseline we capture today can be objectively compared months from now.

Identifies injury risk patterns

Side-to-side asymmetries and pain provocation during testing are well-documented predictors of future musculoskeletal injury.

Highlights mobility vs. stability deficits

The screen separates whether you cannot move into a position (mobility) or cannot control it (stability) — which dictates treatment.

Directs corrective exercise

FMS findings feed directly into a targeted corrective program — no guesswork, no generic templates.

Catches issues before pain develops

Many patients are screened pre-emptively. Addressing dysfunction before it becomes pain is faster, cheaper, and more effective.

Your Visit

What to Expect at FR Institute

The screen takes 15–20 minutes. Your provider will guide you through each of the seven movements with clear instruction and demonstrate as needed. We score each pattern and note any pain provoked.

At the end we walk through findings with you, explain what each score means, and connect the dots to your symptoms or training goals. The screen feeds directly into a personalized corrective exercise plan that targets your specific deficits.
