Overview

Understanding Nerve Pain

Nerve pain — also known as neuropathic pain — is caused by injury or dysfunction to the nerves themselves. The term “neuropathy” refers to any disease or dysfunction affecting nerves in the body. Radiculopathy is a specific type that occurs when a spinal nerve root is compressed, irritated, or inflamed, causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the area supplied by that nerve.

When the irritation happens outside of the spine, it is called peripheral neuropathy. Nerve pain can present in many ways and is often misdiagnosed because it can mimic muscle, joint, or even visceral pain.

A precise neurodynamic evaluation is essential to find the true source — and to deliver lasting relief.

Recognising the Signs

Symptoms & Causes

Common Symptoms

  • Burning or tingling sensation in the affected area
  • Sharp, shooting, or stabbing pain along a nerve pathway
  • Numbness or loss of sensation in part of a limb
  • Increased sensitivity to touch or pressure (allodynia)
  • Muscle weakness or twitching in affected regions
  • Symptoms worse at night or with sustained postures

Underlying Causes

  • Nerve root compression or irritation in the spine (radiculopathy)
  • Peripheral nerve entrapment outside the spine
  • Fascial adhesions impairing nerve glide
  • Trauma, surgery, or repetitive strain to the nerve
  • Systemic factors such as inflammation or metabolic dysfunction
